An Unusual Summer in Colorado

Colorado’s diverse terrain, well established State Park system, and abundant National Parks, Monuments, & Historic Sites make Colorado an easy place to explore at any age.

During the summer we encounter extreme drought conditions and have to change our plans to avoid the Gold Mountain Fire near Ouray. On the flip side, this also means we don’t encounter the usual summer mosquitoes or campfire smoke thanks to the Stage 2 Fire restrictions.

Impressions:

After spending the summer in Colorado we come away with the following impressions:

  • it contains an interesting mix of geologic landscapes
  • you’ll need to go to Rocky Mountain National Park to see wildlife
  • Google GPS directions throughout the State are horrible
  • Getting a Colorado State Park pass is definitely worth the money if you’re looking for comfortable, reasonably priced, full hookup campgrounds

Permits/passes

  • National Park Pass
  • Colorado State Parks – we chose the Vehicle Annual Pass & were required to purchase a 2nd one at 1/2 price for the towed
